The most common Middle Tennessee lawn: deep green, fine to medium texture and happiest in the cool seasons with some afternoon shade.
Tall fescue is the workhorse cool-season grass of Middle Tennessee. It grows in a dense, deep green clump, handles foot traffic, tolerates some shade and keeps its color through much of the year. Improved turf-type varieties have a finer leaf than the old pasture types, and a well-cared-for fescue lawn can look rich and uniform. It is the grass most Nashville homeowners already have, which is why so many local lawn programs are built around it.
Fescue does have limits. It grows in bunches rather than spreading, so thin areas do not fill in on their own, and it struggles in the hottest, driest stretches of July and August, when brown patch can strike. The keys to a good fescue lawn are fall seeding, a taller mowing height, deep and infrequent watering and feeding in early spring and fall. With that rhythm, fescue stays thick and handles the Tennessee climate surprisingly well.
