A rich blue-green cool-season grass with a fine texture that spreads and self-repairs, often blended with fescue.
Kentucky bluegrass is the classic cool-season lawn grass, with a deep blue-green color and a fine, soft texture. Unlike fescue, it spreads by underground stems, which allows it to fill in thin spots and repair damage over time. It is rarely planted alone in Middle Tennessee, where summers are hot, but it blends well with turf-type tall fescue to give a lawn that has both the toughness of fescue and some of the self-repair of bluegrass.
Bluegrass wants sun, regular watering and a steady feeding program, and it can go dormant and turn tan in prolonged summer heat, though it usually recovers when water returns. It is slow to germinate, which is why it is usually mixed into seed blends rather than used on its own. For a cool-season lawn with a refined look and a bit of regrowth ability, a fescue and bluegrass blend is an excellent choice.
